Sixteen Tons Some people say a man is made outta mud A poor man is made outta muscle and blood Muscle and blood, skin and bones A mind that’s weak and a back that’s strong You load sixteen tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store I was born one mornin’ when the sun didn’t shine I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal And the straw boss said “Well, bless my soul” You load sixteen tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store I was born one mornin’, it was drizzlin’ rain Fightin’ and trouble are my middle names I was raised in a swamp by an ol’ mama lion Ain’t no high-toned woman make me toe the line You load sixteen tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store If you see me comin’, better step aside A lotta men didn’t, a lotta men died One fist of iron, the other one steel If the right one don’t get you, then the left one will You load sixteen tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store Yes, I owe my soul to the company store Written by Merle Travis. Good – as good as Ernies.

No- that was Jimmy Dean, another voice, that was in a class of it’s own…cheers, Ernie
Pretty much. Pernell Roberts recorded an album and went on to act in musicals, Michael Landon also recorded several songs for Bonanza. Dan Blocker did sing a couple of songs with all the others, but singing wasn’t his forte.

A perfect song for Lorne Green deep, cavernous voice. Sorry Johnny, Tennessee and company, from deep down there, he tops everyone else I’ve heard singning it.
He is right the coal miners are the tuffest jack palance smashed marlon brandos nose and they ran over his arm with a tank in attack.
Great song (haven’t heard it for years!) and such interesting pictures of Lorne Greene. Many thanks for posting.
Awesome- Brought back memories of my childhood
Great version!
Thank´s so much!
